What is the name of your state? PA

My husband received a certified letter notifying him of collection proceedings being taken against him for a CitiBank credit card. We checked his credit report and the only account he had with CitiBank was paid a couple of years ago. There is no account on his credit report with the account number that is on the summons.

My question is.....what do we do now? Who should we contact to dispute this before going to court?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

*** Gee, I would think that a logical start would be to contact whoever sent him the letter and try to get some information on it.... wouldn't you??

Did you check all three credit reports?

Also, with all of the bank mergers in the last several years, it's quite possible that the account was from another bank bought out by Citibank.

credit reports

Shycat, we only checked Experian. I also thought about it being an account that was bought out by CitiBank, however I'm assuming that the account number should have stayed the same.

I'm sure Jetx will correct that assumption if I'm wrong.

Nope, its not unusual for account numbers to be changed when takeovers and mergers happen. Pull all 3 reports, one of the others may give you more info. As JetX noted, you can always call them and ask who the original creditor was.

Thanks, Ladynred. It's unbelievable to me that they can change account numbers. How in the world would you ever keep things straight? ah, well, I'll pull the other reports and see what they say.

not there...

I checked my husbands other two credit reports and that account or amount is not on those either. There are no accounts of his left in collections for a credit card.

Thanks for all your input.
