my brother and i received a small cash life insurance claim after my father's death in 04. is this cash taxable? does it get written down? there is no space for it on the tax form. so...

Post this question on the tax law message board, or better yet, consult with a local CPA or tax accountant about it. There certainly will be no federal income tax on it, but state income tax may be another matter.
