California. My "ex-husband" filed for divorce in 1997 and never finished the divorce. It's now 4 years later and I'm trying to get a divorce decree without settling our property issues as he's sold most of our personal property without my consent. I need to get a divorce decree to get remarried. Where and how do I get a bifurcation done? All the legal services I've talked to want to charge over $350.
Someone please help! Thank you! Amy
My response:
At this point, you don't need bifurcation - - the legal term for the splitting of various issues from one another.
If you can't afford the money for an attorney or paralegal to file a new Petition for Dissolution, then I can suggest the following:
1. Contact your nearest Legal Aid office and see if they can take your case. They charge based upon your ability to pay.
2. Call your State Bar Association and see if they have a Pro Bono panel of attorneys, and choose one that can take your case.
3. Or, if all else fails, you can go to your nearest bookstore ("Barnes & Noble" highly recommended) and buy a book on the subject, follow the directions, and try it out on your own.
Good luck to you.
