I eloped in New Orleans (1995) and live in New York, I found out my husband was already married here. He has since been deported and am looking to find out if I need to get a divorce.. I was told by 2 lawyers that I would have to but on reading some of the posts here I am questioning it. Is a divorce neccessary or an annulment?? Please help...

Most interesting.

I'm not an attorney, but your question is very interesting.

I would guess there would be no need for divorce or annulment since your marriage wasn't legitimate in the first place.

But what does one do about taxes filed jointly and jointly-held credit cards and such? I would be more worried about YOU being totally liable and taking on the pitfalls the fraudulent marriage produced.

Once you have consulted a lawyer, and you have determined your license may be "pulled," I'd contact the Louisiana State Archives office and see if you can get any help.

Louisiana State Archives
3851 Essen Lane
P.O. Box 94125

I'd call before I would send mail.
