I live in Oregon. I am in the process of a divorce. We have 3 children, which I have adopted and love as my own.

My question is: My wife (?) and I were married (?) 4 years ago. Because of her wanting to rush and get it done, she set the date as of Nov. 26, 1997. My divorce was suppose to be final by then. I wanted to wait, I was in a state of turmoil and depression, holding on for dear life to this woman. I actually did not want to get married, but was certain she would walk on me if I said no to this date, however I am responsible for my decision. So, we got married in Lincoln Nebraska. The divorce was not final until December 26 1997.

I had thought the minister had forged the date on the license. We had asked him to date it late december after the 26th. He did not. It is dated 11-26-97.

My wife (?) doesn't know I am pursuing this.

Obviously I have commited bigamy. If so, what are the consequences legally to me criminally? Is this something that I could get fined for? Also, if my marriage is in fact null and void, then what about my adoption of the kids?

thanks!

Kim

Let me be clear on this--you asked a minister to perjure himself on a legal document? And now you want a divorce from the woman you were desperate to hang on to?
Maybe you could marry her now, with a legitimate date, and then quickly get a divorce. You can tell her you want to renew your vows.

vtzirn,

There are many facets of this story I am not going to get into. My question regardless of your opinion, is what are the consequences of bigamy in criminal law?

I know what I did was inappropriate, but 2 wrongs don't make a right. The best thing for both of us is to get on with our lives, we are not compatible.

Also, I want to know about the adoption.
