What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Tennessee. What are the legalities of a signed bill of sale that wasn't signed in front of a notary and no money exchanged?

You're assuming that OP is referring to a motor vehicle bill of sale.
How do you figure I assumed a vehicle sale? Because I gave an example using a vehicle bill of sale?

Here is Tennessee-specific information on bills of sale: http://trace.tennessee.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1130&context=transactions

A bill of sale in contracts is a written agreement that transfers or assigns a right or interest in goods or personal chattels to another. It conveys title.

Yes, that's why I assumed that you assumed it was a vehicle sale. :D

That's right.

But even the Model Bill of Sale in that article appears to imply that notarization of signatures is not mandatory which is likely the case with private sales of personal property.

Notarization is mandatory on the vehicle Bill of Sale required by the DMV.

Let's wait and see if the OP comes back with any more details about his situation.

Waiting for more information is smart.
