I live in a New Jersey apt, and have given notice to my landlord that I am vacating in a few weeks. Amongst my move-out responsibilities are to clean the carpet and replace all blinds intact, or a $50 carpet cleaning fee and a $16-per-blind replacement fee will be deducted from my security deposit. I have lived here for 6 years, and when I moved in, the carpet already had discoloration stains and was noticably worn in some areas from the previous tenant(s).
In addition, the blinds were already dry-rotted, and over the course of 6 years, a slat or 2 has snapped off at the ends. I documented these observations on my move-in inspection form the day I moved in.
MY QUESTIONS: 1- how many years is an apartment complex permitted to keep the same carpet without replacing it for the next tenant? (I don't feel I should be responsible to pay to clean something that should be thrown out.) 2- am I responsible to now pay for brand-new blinds for the next tenant, when these blinds were already on their last legs at the time I moved in, simply due to normal contact with something that's dry-rotted?

When you and the Landlord walked through before making a contract , did you and the Landlord sign the walk through list ?

If not , I'd suggest pictures ( and estimates , statements , maybe a print out from the net ) something to show the life expectancy of both carpets and blinds .

Provide a copy to the Landlord before move out and request those cost not be deducted .

If the Landlord deducts anyways , let the Court decide .

How Many Years for NJ Carpet in Apt?

Thanks. How many years is an apartment complex permitted to keep the same carpet without replacing it for the next tenant? (I don't feel I should be responsible to pay to clean something that should be thrown out.)

Are you just moving in or moving out?
Usually when you move in you note faults of the apartment on a disclaimer that is given back to the landlord - if you noted the state of the carpet - you shouldn't be held liable.
I've been in your shoes before - hope everything works out!
