Only Fair

My manager was downsized due to poor job performance. Half a year later, I was promoted (without asking for it)into the same position - exact same duties, same employees, etc., with a job grade and title one level lower than my predecessor. I have received a good job performance review. When (unknownst to me) management bonuses came out (all ten department heads got them except for me), I was told I did not receive a bonus because my job grade was one below that of my management peers according to personnel. My predecessor would have gotten the bonus if she hadn't been downsized. Ethically it's wrong, though legally I know they have me, based upon the job grade arguement.

The interesting part however, is there is one department manager who has the same job grade as myself, who did receive the bonus and I have proof making the statement from the personnel rep a lie (I have proof of the job grade and bonus for the other manager and I have the statement from the personnel rep). Based upon this, I think I have a clear-cut case against my employers.

Let me know what you think? Thanx

Unless there was discrimination on the basis of race, sex, color, creed, etc. I think that you have a problem. There is no need to give you the same level as your predecessor as a matter of law, although if the office is part of a large company with uniform policies, etc., you may have a better internal argument.
