What is the name of your state? CA

I worked for a small accounting office in Sacramento, CA. One day, while my boss had unexpectedly taken off for the afternoon, I had a personal emergency which had to be taken care of. I had no key and left the office unlocked. I received a call later that day that $200 was missing, and then again from Sac county sheriff. I was immediately released from my work duties, and told that I would not receive a paycheck to offset the loss to the store. What can I do about this? My former boss told me that they were 'in the process' of filing criminal charges against me but has lied several times since the incident.
