What is the name of your state? Washington

I live in Washington State, but recently purchased a used 93 Volvo from a private party in Oregon. It was sold to me as a vehicle in great shape, well maintained, that had recently gotten a clean bill of health from a volvo service. I noticed problems with it on my drive home- after a check up it will cost $2500 to repair everything.
BUT! I also noticed upon arriving home that the title does not in fact have the name of the seller on it. It lists an auto dealer. I called the seller and asked him about this immediately and he told me that he just never got around to trasnferring the title and that he was selling it on behalf of the dealer who he knows. He never said this to me when he was selling it.
Was this sale legal? Do I have recourse to get out of it and get my money back? I have not transferred the title yet or signed anything on the title. I did sign a handwritten note saying I bought it as is.

Why didn't you do any homework?

You should have had the car checked out with a mechanic and ask the dept. of motor vehicle, the questions about owner, liens, etc.
