I am in California.

In 1994 I suffered a ruptured berry brain aneurysm. I was self employed and could not afford to pay into state disability. Prior to my self employment I had worked and contributed to SSDI & state disability for 17 years. I was turned down for State Disability because I was self employed. I went without income for many months.

In trying to resume my business duties it took twice as long (12-17 hours a day, 6 days a week) due to my having to relearn my profession. I ended up losing all my accounts due to inability to meet deadlines. Lost my business and took a job with a hospital where I was terminated for my disability.

I saw a neuropsychologist, who specializes in brain injury, who evaluated my cognitive function and found that I am "disabled".

Now I don't know if I should try again for State Disability or apply for SSDI. How long could this take? What would an attorney charge?

I also own a manufactured home in a mobile home park and wonder if there could be a problem in selling this to move out of state to lower my cost of living?

Thanks much for any advice!

Linda

Go ahead and apply. When you Apply you would be applying for Both SSDI & SSI .
If found ineligible for SSDI , you would receive SSI If you were found disabled .

Since you have a DR. stating you are disabled , File on your own.
If denied then get an SSI lawyer involved for appeals .

If they take you case ,they usually take 25 percent of the lump sum of the back pay from when you applied .

How long did you work for the hospital? What county? When?
Have you contacted the independent loving center for assistance with your SSI/SSDI application?
If you make the application correctly, you may not have to go through appeals/reconsideration. It is important for the start of disability to be correctly determined.
It is good you saw a neurospychologist.

I was with the hospital for a total of 3 1/2 years, the last year in the position I was terminated from. This was in Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California.

I have not contacted anyone for help as I didn't know who to contact. Would it be under "Independing Living Center" in the phone book or another name?

Thanks!

As long as you live in your home SSA considers that asset exempt .

If however you sell , SSA would consider the proceeds an Asset .

Would you be planning on living or buying a New Place >

That might make a difference , I am not sure .

Also be aware , If you qualify for SSI only , different States allow Different amounts , based on Their cost of living .

SSDI would be the same amount in All States , I do believe .

So the Sales of your home is something to check into further .
