My husband and I live in Washington state. Last summer we signed a one year apartment lease which expires 6/30/01. Since then we have had nothing but noisy neighbors which is having a negative influence on my husband as he works nights and sleeps during the day. We realize there is nothing we can do about that because after all this apartment living--even though we were assured that we would not hear a noise from any neighbor. Anyway we have two cars and the apartment only allows one parking space. There's additional parking space that's kinda a free-for-all and so one of our cars is there. This second "assigned" spot is in a dark, un-lit area. This weekend it was broken into and the CD player ripped out doing major damage to the dash and there's big scratch marks on the exterior of the car including damaged doors and they gouged holes in the door above and below one of the locks to gain entry. There is at least $3-4 thousand dollars damage including missing personal items. I called the police first and then reported this to the apartment manager who informed me that within the last few days a car was stolen from our complex and then he backtracked and said he didn't know if it was stolen after all. I think he's lying to me about not knowing. He didn't seem to interested in posting an alert to the other tennents. Which I feel he should have done after that car was stolen...can we break a lease because they failed to provide adequate electical outdoor lighting?? We are not holding them responsibile for the break-in but we feel we should've been informed when that other car was stolen and that if the area was lighted then the break-in may have been avoided. What if any recourse do we have regarding breaking the lease??
