I have a friend living in San Francisco, CA who signed a 14 month apartment lease starting in December 2000. He was just laid off because his company went into bankcruptcy. Is it legal to break the lease without any penalties? Thank you.

You friend is an IDOIT...

Livin high off the hog...spending every dime he makes, throwin money out the window with a $2400 a month apartment and he wants sympathy... HAH.

He might as well file for bankruptcy, and stiff the landlord for a few months rent.
