I live in Brooklyn, New York. My question is this--My apartment building is going co-op. My lease was just up & the landlord is not re-newing the lease. We were told either to buy into the co-op apt. or look for another apartment. Can this be done? I know of alot of buildings that went co-op & the renters did not have to buy nor did they have to move.
What is the situation? Can I legally stay here & continue renting? Or, do I have to move. I cannot afford the down payment to buy into the co-op.

I NEED your HELP-----QUICKLY!!

Does the building have 6 or more apartments and built before 1974? is your rent less the $2000 a month

Then is your lease rent stabilized?

lots of questions you need to answer before i can fully assess your situation

How long have you lived there? what is the rent? is the coop plan an eviction type? ......did they give you a BIG book explaining the conversion..you have a right to get one.

where is your apartment what floor?, they always like to get the 1st floor wth the yard, how long is the landlord giving you to move? is it in a letter?

in some co-op plans if you dont buy in 2 or 3 years you will be evicted.....but unless you are a FREE market rental, you have rights.

and even then how did they deregulate the apartment? was it legal? see a lot of stuff for you to investigate you will have to explain every detail

Also you MUST figure on taking 2 or 3 days off from work...use your vacation days, or personal days ...you will have to go to DHCR, the buildings dept, and the Attorney generals office, and maybe see a lawyer too.....

Its your home you are trying to protect...... AND they can get by without you for a couple of days at work!
