I have taken on the role as "mentor" to an inner-city young adult. I have done so before and the results were very satisfying. This current young man was arrested four years ago for selling drugs he was sentenced to four years in prison . He got out after 16 months but violated his parole and was sent back to finish out his sentence. He was released July 2nd 2001. On October 8 he and 2 friends broke into a house during daylight hours and stole a music system and cd player. The young man I am working with did not do the actual breaking in however he sold the cd player for $40.00. The two other young men were not arrested. Bail was posted at $60,000 which was reduced to $25,000. I posted his bail. I have been an inner-city teacher for 25 years and have won awards for my teaching and care. Since his arrest I have enrolled him in an adult learning center to get his g.e.d.. I am currently looking for employment for him. He has 7 brothers all with criminal records. It is obvious to me that jail did not do him any good, the system did not work. I had him drug tested it came back clean. He has an obvious learning disability which is currently being tested. What are his chances of not serving another prison sentence, considering the steps I have taken and will continue to take?
