What is the name of your state?california

I had a Providian credit card with $1500 limit some years ago on which i charged some $1200. Due to failures to pay my interest went up and soon owed close to $4000 and climbed due to enormous interest rates. It went to collections and i've had $100/month removed from my checking account for probably a year or so and i still owe $3400 because they're charging me interest to hold that debt. 1) IS THIS LEGAL? and 2) Has the statute of limitations run out on the original debt? (i don't remember when the last Providian charge was and i'm not really sure how to find that out as i no longer have my statements but i'm guessing it is at LEAST 3 (if not 4 or more) years. I have more than paid my original charges and would like to simply stop paying. Is it within my rights to do so?

thank you so much.

p.s. is the interest in any way considered "new debt"?
