CA Legislature vs. The People of CA

What is the name of your state? CA (obvious?)

I just want to know what you folks think about this:

In 2000, The People of California passed California's Proposition 22, which defined "Marriage" as "between one man and one woman."

Today (Sept 8), my local paper, The Sacramento Bee, reported that the California Legislature (75% Socio-Dems and 25% Republicans) passed a bill allowing Same Sex Marriage. Of course, our Governor will veto it, as expected by the Legislature.

Considering that the California Constitution forbids the state Legislature from trumping the will of The People, is it even legal for our Legislators to consider and pass this bill? Or are they futilly wasting their time in session and, ultimately, taxpayer money?

Interesting note: This is not the only issue where the Legislature attempts to ignore the will of The People of California.
