What is the name of your state?NC
so if you make a payment arrangment over the phone and a CA accepts it and then they cash your check is that not enough proof that they accepted your payment. I am wondering now what is the point to make any payments to these CA's if they can still take you to court even if you made the payments. Should I stop all payments.

Them cashing them check means NOTHING as far as 'agreeing' to anything. Unelss you have the payment/settlement agreement IN WRITING, their verbal 'acceptance' means diddly-squat ! You must understand, these slimeballs will say ANYTHING to get money out of you and that includes bald-faced LIES !

Depending on how much you owe, how old the debt is and your assets, you may not be sued at all. Some creditors are sue-happy and will sue no matter what you do. Collection agencies don't want a long drawn-out payment plan, they want to maximize their profits by making you pay as much as possible as fast as possible. Most debt collectors will rarely hold onto a non-paying account for more than 3-6 months before they sell it off. A few will go longer before selling it.

The 'benefit' in paying a collection agency is debatable. The negative entry is already plastered to your credit reports for 7-1/2 years. A 'paid collection' or 'settled for less than full' is a NEGATIVE entry on your reports and does NOT help your scores one bit. If you want the warm-fuzzy of paying all your debts, go for it, but it won't help your scores unless they will agree to delete their tradelines once you pay them - and that can be tough to get.
