What is the name of your state? What is the name of your state? WV

We recently looked into my husbands credit reports and found a lot of mis- information in them. Particularly Esperian. They had 2 SS #'s that did not belong to him 9 addresses that have nothing to do with him and accounts that were not his. One in particular was a foreclosure on a mortgage. We finally got that fixed and cleaned and we opted out at the major credit reporting agency's then found new stuff added that was again not his. I was told he has a common name and it is easy for the report to contain wrong info **gives me such a warm secure feeling**

I was wondering if having the credit report fixed and disputing the info would hash up old debts that were long forgotten?

I recently got a letter from Portifolio Recovery Associates

The letter begins as follows:

Portifolio Recovery Associates,LLC purchased your account from CAMCO on 8/18/02 your current balance is $1696.73. Please make all checks payable to Portfolio Recovery Associates then it goes on with and address and phone # to call for clarification

Honestly I have no idea who CAMCO or Portifolio Recovery is nor do I have any outstanding accounts.

Wracking my brain the only thing I can think of is 2 credit cards we couldn't pay in 1985 when we had a failed business venture - these cards were issued in Connecticut. If it is it's been almost 20 years! Can we dispute this ourselves or do we need to get a lawyer

Any insight would be greatly appreciated

Sorry this is so long but I thought I should explain as much as I could

Thanks

If the debt was in SCAMCO's hands you can bet it is a VERY old debt and LONG past the statute of limitations (SOL) for them to be able to make you pay anything. SCAMCO's deal is buying old, old debts and scaring people into paying on them. Yes, your cleanup efforts likely did wake up PRA and/or SCAMCO, should have opted out BEFORE you started the repair efforts.

Anyway, if your sure the debt is more than 5 years old (WV's SOL on credit cards). then just send the slugs at PRA a cease and desist letter telling them never to bother you about the debt again as it is time-barred.

Here is a letter specifically for this situation:

The state statute you need to complete the letter is on that same site. Send it certified, RRR and keep copies of everything.
