What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? New Jersey

I purchase life insurance as a retiree from my former company. I just received a $3,000 bill for last year's life insurance which, according to the benefits department, was previously undercharged, even though they gave me the rates I paid in writing. (The company actually deducted the amount each month from my checking account). I was told I had to pay this immediately or lose all my insurance (medical and life), which I cannot afford to do.

In discussing this with several layers of management in the benefits group, I reached a stonewall. They were not even willing to negotiate a timed payment. They will send some forms for an appeal but the appeal timing will extend beyond the time due for payment and if I don't pay, I risk losing insurance without the ability to re-enroll.

Any advice on my appeal or other?

Thank you.
