What is the name of your state?TN
This is so crazy, sorry in advance for so many details. A few months ago a middle aged lady died. Authories said looks like suicide (overdose). She had never married until a couple weeks before her death.

The lady and her family were friends of my family. They have a business, did some work for Dad and me. She began coming around (5 or 6 times) asking for Dad to listen to her problems. Dad is elderly and alone, of course would help and listen.I'm sure enjoyed having some company. Dad hired her to do some work around the house and paid her. She starting telling everyone my dad and she were dating. Not true. He has a girlfriend of 5 years. Then she bought a small ring and said Dad bought it. Not true. Next she's telling everyone they are getting married. When Dad heard the rumors he called her up and told her not to come around anymore and stop lying about him. Shortly after, she called him with news she was getting married and didn't need him anymore. Dad said how strange that was, she must be crazy. But good, maybe she'll stop talking about me.

She got married and two weeks later, she's dead. Her mother has told everyone including the police she was so heartbroken about their breakup she couldn't live without my dad. Only got married to get even with him. He lives in a small town, all parties go to church together so my dad stopped going because of the talking. The minister has taken sides with the mother. He attended this church for over 20 years. He's so upset because he hasn't done anything wrong. They are threating to sue him and his girlfriend for whatever they can. The gossip is so bad, Dad and his girlfriend have broken up. This stress cannot be good for his health. He's not sleeping.

Can he sue for slander and defamation of character or anything? He was an executive before retirement and is a widower. So very respected and spoken so highly of until this.

Buy dad a t-shirt with the words "KISS MY ASS" on the front and back and tell him to forget it. People aren't worth the effort and he has no legal case.

After the second paragraph I thought you were going to tell us she was pregnant. Whew!

Your dad grabbed up another girlfriend after this experience? Maybe you should have him get professional help.

Your "minister" should be working at the carwash, and his friends obviously weren't really friends. You can't sue people for being jerks, but at some point you could take action if you had specific comments or allegations that were displayed publicly. Then you have to prove damages.

I think the T-shirt idea is the the best.
