having to take off work in order to take my son to court?

My son has been detained in a juvenile detention center, and will be going to court in a couple of weeks. I have had to miss one day of work so far, and am expecting that I will have to miss more in the future due to this. My concern centers around the possibility of losing my job due to attendance problems. I am under the impression that this type of situation cannot be used against me by my employer. Does anyone know the laws surrounding an employers, or an employees rights as they pertain to attendance issues which are a result of having to take care of legal matters involving a minor child?

There are NO statutory laws that exempt an employer from terminating an employee for excessive absences for taking "care of legal matters involving a minor child?" Especially in YOUR state.
