I am separated from my husband. We were married & lived together in Pennsylvania. My husband is dragging his feet with finalizing the divorce papers. I now live with my 3 kids in Illinois (this was done with a lawyer). I want to buy a house in Illinois. The divorce is not final. I think we are legally separated. I fired my lawyer, becuase they were not doing what I had asked them to do. Can I buy a house in Illinois before the divorce is final? I don't want my husband to have any stake in this house.

My response:

Unless you know, for a fact, you have "legal separation" (which I doubt if you're going through a divorce), then I wouldn't buy a house right now if I were you. Wait until you get that Divorce Decree in your hot little hands, first.

All the best,
