I am an 18 year old father living in a stable family enviornment. Both the mother and i have been taking cae of our daughter but i am the only one with a high school diploma and going to college. The mother has not taken the GED or finished high school. My daughter is 10 months old. While i am at college i have my mother who works at home taking care of my daughter. I am wondering that even though tha the mother usually gets custody of a young child, do i have a good chance of taking custody of her? (i am a resident o New York State and please comment and write anything to me with advise about anything i should do or can do)

Though it IS very important, I doubt the court will take into consideration the difference in your education/goals. Rather, they will look to serve the best interests of the baby.

It sounds like you have a workable joint physical custody situation going on now, and that is likely what the court will order to continue. It's really the best of both worlds for your baby right now--your daughter is forming bonds with both parents. Try to maintain a good relationship with the mother and never make derogatory comments about her. Maybe when it's time to start school, some other arrangements will have to be decided. Good luck to you all.
