What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California
I am a woman. I've been living with "John" for 14 years in the house he purchased. I have done all the landscaping, and gave him a $1500 shed, that he's turned into an illegal extra bedroom. He has asked me to move out. I am still living there, but am looking for a new place. I put every paycheck I earned, (a not inconsiderable sum) into his house and our life together. Do I have any legal standing in California to ask him for a small sum of money to get started again in a new life. I asked him for $12,000 - based on $50 a month for 168 months. Thank you for any advice you can offer.

Sure, you have EVERY right to ask. America - what a country!

He has every right to refuse. America - what a country!

Seriously, you want to be PAID for the companionship you provided?

Sure, you can ask. He can refuse. If you really want to pursue it, the thing to do is consult with a couple of family law attorneys and find out what your local court's climate is on the topic of palimony.

Yes, I get that, but what about the improvements I made to his property?

Or I can wait a year and turn him in the Building Department. The fines will be in the thousands. Sometime revenge is best eaten cold.

THAT course of action doesn't get YOU any $$ with which to start a new life.
True, but if I'm getting nothing anyway, it's free. I know it sounds obnoxious and the best thing to do is just move on. At age 65, and in poor health, I suspect his quality of life is about to decline. I, on the other hand, am free to swim and hike and bike without him!

i apologize in advance if this comes off as rude...because it's not meant that way...but at your age....maybe enjoying the rest of your life is a better option. trying to do Karma's job for her....can sometimes cause her to whip around and throw something at you for rushing her.

Wise words. Thank you. Yes, better to leave an abusive situation and move on.

Have you already consulted with two or more family law attorneys?

You opted to improve the place in which you were living, and increase your enjoyment of the property. Such improvements were totally at your option.

Even when one OWNS a house they don't necessarilly ever recover the cost of many or any improvements!

Is it just me, or does OP's situation sound a lot like https://forum.freeadvice.com/divorce-separation-annulment-36/thrown-out-what-my-legal-standing-583689.html

Apparently there's a lot of men in CA who avoid hiring a gardener/landscaping architect by getting themselves a live in girlfriend...

Awfully similar, non?

However given this thread, one almost wishes the OP could be held equally liable for that illegal little bedroom. All's fair in love and war!
