What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? illinois

I am currently buried in student loan debt, with $20,000.00 of it for classes that I never attended. I signed up for these classes but tried to drop them before attending because I could not come up with the money to pay for them. My university placed an account hold on my student account due to the unpaid classes, so I could not drop the classes before the assigned drop date. They have no record of me attending these classes, but still charged me $20,000.00 for them. Their reasoning is that I did not drop them before the stated last day to withdraw without charges, but I could not drop the classes at that time due to the hold on my account that was placed because I had yet to pay for the classes. They would not let me drop the classes I could not pay for because I had not paid for them! I am frustrated because I am now paying interest on the $20,000.00 loan I had to take out to get these charges covered so I could continue school. I do not think I should have to pay for classes I never took because the school placed a hold on my account that prevented me from dropping the classes (and thus the charges) in a timely fashion. Can I sue this school for the money back? It is a private school

Suing Universities is usually a lost cause. They have policies and procedures in place to make sure students do what they are supposed to do - go to classes and pay for them. I am willing to bet you missed a deadline or did not follow the procedures, so you are on the tab for the student loans.

FYI for anyone else who reads this - the university webpage should have all the important dates to remember. Keep the schedule like your holy grail so that you do not end up in this situation. Schools really work the best for students that show up, pass all their classes, graduate, get a job, and pay their loans.
