One day in we needed to clean up some leaves. We went to the town center, obtained a burn permit. When we first started to burn the leaves, within the first 60 seconds, a wind gust blew a burning ember into my neighbor’s yard, where he had dry leaves and huge wood pile of debris stored 6 feet high. Immediately we grabbed the hose which was right there, but no water came out. Fire Dept was contacted immediately as well.
Neighbors went to get their hoses as well, while we waited for the fire dept, again they didn’t have any water either. The fire grew and started a shed on fire on the neighbor’s property, and by this the time the fire department arrived. The neighbors used to go camping and had stock piled propane cylinders when they went on sale. The fire departments little truck quickly ran out of its stored water, when the fire department went to tap a hydrant, no water.
We did NOT have insurance for several reasons. Now the neighbor’s insurance company mails us a Subrogation letter for a whole lot of money, I am temporarily unemployed, and have no savings. What are my options? Can I sue the city for the subrogation amount? What is the name of your state?
