Sorry wrong forum :)

Hi, my name is Greg and I am from Maine. Basically my college, starting this semester, has begun enrolling all students in third party healthcare plans at a cost of 300 dollars per year.

If the student already has coverage, the burdon is on the student to contact that provider with proof that you already have coverage. They will then reverse the charge.

Is it legal for my school to automatically enroll every student without thier consent? Theby, leaving the burdon on the student to reverse the coverage?

Thanks

Yes, of course it is legal.

It is legal for them to require health coverage.

It is legal for them to charge a health fee.

They can charge a health fee whether or not you have other coverages. (as one of the universities I attended did)

It is very likely that you were notified of this policy change and had an opportunity to show proof of coverage before being charged. Even if you were not, the university has done nothing illegal, or even wrong

Since you do not have to pay the charge if you provide proof of coverage, you are really out nothing, so how could this policy even remotely be illegal?

Yes it is. Due to the healthcare issues associated with young college students and dorms, it is not only prudent but also becoming standard at all major Universities.
