What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NY

My friend have been sued from selling international edition textbooks in USA. It's Civil matter. I'm wondering what would be the possible consequences if he (Thai citizen under study VISA) didn't respond to the summon?

- In terms of VISA status (Will he get deported from USA?)
- If so, will it effect him not to be able to get back to USA?
- Will he get caught and put in jail?
