I suggested this for someone else whose ex was playing games with his child's name. Have your family members and yourself give kiddo gifts of magazine and other type subscriptions of whatever she is interested in so that she keeps getting cool stuff at home to her legal name . :D

Maybe some other personalized stuff, like a sign for her door with her name, a bean bag chair and anything else you can think of.

And, of course, DO file contempt.
that's a great idea

I have NEVER been asked for a copy of kiddos birth certificate by her school.
In NJ you have to provide BC, SS card, 3 proof(s) of residency, immunization record which must reflect the same name as the BC and SS card (look out for those Jr's!!), transfer records, if appl. This is for public schools, as well as the Catholic High School my son attended.

You also need BC to sign up for any athletic activities, from baseball to karate to ice skating...

Weird. We've never had to provide ANY proof of name or anything else. In fact, we don't even have to 'enroll' our kids after their first year at our school. They're just perpetually enrolled every year unless their records are transferred somewhere else. I haven't enrolled either of the girls since they started Kindergarten.

Also... what's the big deal w/names? Honest question here. I just don't get it.

follow up

i called the state dept of vital stats. she has not legally changed her name. the fraud dept will investigate how she is enrolled. if she is enrolled under a doctored b.c. it is a 3rd degree felony.

I sure was... shoot, when we moved here, I had to fish though umpteen boxes because they absolutely would not register CC, jr. into school out here. In CA, it's mandatory, BC, shot records, proof of residency. If you don't have it, come back when you do.

Wow.

'Round here... we had so many Katrina refugees that they made it so that anyone - even a child - can walk into ANY school any say "I'm homeless and want to go to school" and they'll be enrolled. No records, no proof of residency, nothing. Just a desire to go to school and no address.

See... maybe it's my way of thinking... but I have YET to meet a man that was worth me going to jail over. A 3rd degree felony over some dude??? You've GOT to be kidding me.

Schools around here have gotten ruthless with their requirements. Like Humusluvr, in CA we've got a big issue (and getting bigger) with the illegal population. While there are some school districts that take just about anyone (which is why I refuse to live in the city of Los Angeles), other districts will go so far as to follow your child home or show up at your doorstep at night just to make sure you live where you say you live. If they find you living somewhere else... out you go, to the school you're supposed to be at.

I see that.

I'm willing to bet though, that the child's BC was NOT required, was NOT doctored, and much like my school, they just filled in a blank when it asked for the kiddo's name and mom wrote down HER last name. Easy as pie.

It's also possible that it was a clerical error and the child was automatically given Mom's last name in the computer.

I thought it was the BF's last name the child was registered under.

Our township is always checking residency claims. We have a diversified mix of folks in my town and tons of residents are limo drivers in NYC - and people started squalking when cars with NYC license plates were dropping off 6-7 kids each - hence, the proof of residency requirements.

Sigh...protect those tax dollars!

I would say however I have had cases where the BC is DOCTORED and a child enrolled illegally. Freaked out the court, the police department and various others when I started pressing the issue. I am not very nice at times. It is not common but it DOES happen.
