Can a sheriff be charged for failing to properly conduct an investigation? In particular, a missing person's case that's been going on for 3 years; sheriff has no file on the case; sheriff refused outside help from other law enforcement; sheriff's nephew may possibly be involved; sheriff failed to properly conduct searches in looking for the body in case of foul play. What happens if this turns out to be a case of murder? Would it make a difference in whether charges could be filed against the sheriff? Would the state (MS) prosecute or would the family sue? Thank you.
