My car is registered in NJ. I transported it out of the USA and I am paying the insurance there. Can I cancel my NJ insurance without losing registration ? I would like to keep my licence plates but I don't want to pay insurance here as I am already paying it out of the country. What will happen if I simply cancel my insurance ? I don't intent to return the car to USA and continue insurance here. It is not possible to have an accident in USA as car is not here so why pay insurance.

Okay, so why keep your vehicle registered? Most states have laws that say if your vehicle is registered, you must also maintain insurance.

Because I would have to import that car to this other country and US cars can't be imported there but I am alowed to drive the car with US licence plates.

You can't have your cake and eat it too.

Keeping up your insurance is the price you must pay to keep you NJ registration.

And then again, if the car is out of the country, how is anyone in NJ going to be able to pull you over and cite you for not having insurance?

True, but the DMV is allowed to do random checks through the mail. They will send a letter asking for proof of insurance to be submitted. If you don't have it you can be fined, and have your license suspended.

From the NJ Department of Insurance website:
As automobile insurance in New Jersey is mandatory, if you are uninsured you are breaking the law. And the penalties for driving uninsured are getting more severe. In addition to risking economic loss by not having insurance protection, you risk fines, suspension of driver's license or registration and even time in jail. In the future, your car could be impounded if you are caught behind the wheel without coverage.

So, you are correct, unless this person gets randomly audited.

Do they even do random audits in NJ? There are more drivers per capita in that state then any other; surely they must have more important things to do (like worry about the crazy people actually DRIVING there!) then that. Besides, he does have insurance, just not IN NJ. The only problem I could potentially see is if they require proof of insurance to renew registration. I can ask my boyfriend about that (he lives in NJ, poor guy ;) )

They don't have to pull you over. It is not just

Your insurance is on file electronically.

If you cancel or allow your insurance to lapse, your insurance company is required to send that info to the DMV.

Your registration will be pulled, and so will your NJ license.

This guy is pulling a importation scam, and wants to not pay. Keep minium NJ coverage, and he can drive the vehicle he wants in a foreign land.
