NY state--We have a month-to-month contract for gym membership. We never went, and when the billing credit card expired we assumed it would render the contract void. They sent it to collections and said we must pay back months' bills in order to officially cancel per the contract. Any way around this?

I'm sure that your contract explains in detail the proper way to cancel your membership. I suggest that you pull out your contract and read it. Once you are done with that, then pay what you owe and properly cancel your contract.
