Cant find claim numbers

My wifes mother just passed away. she told us about three life Ins. policies she had. We have called Unum and hartford and they say that they dont know what the numbers are. We cant even file the claim papers until we get the policy numbers. We're stuck. What do we do?

Do you know for sure that the policies were with Unum and Hartford? Do you know who the beneficiaries are? If so, send in a death certificate and a letter of instruction to the company signed by the possible beneficiaries stating that the insured has passed away and that the beneficiaries would like the necessary paperwork sent to them. Include the social security number of your mother in law in the letters.

Is it possible that the names of the insurance companies could have changed since your relative owned the policy, if the companies were merged or bought out by some other company? Have a policy search done through the top 400 insurance companies for a $75 fee through MIB Group. Do you know whether this policy was purchased through her place of employment or personally (on her own)?
