I had no credit so a "friend" was approved for the car I wanted to purchase with the verbal agreement that I would pay the monthly dues and when I had established some credit the debt would be transferred to my name. I also traded in my own car for a value of $2500 and put down $1000 cash and since then have made six monthly payments of $288.

My "friend" came around a week ago and asked to borrow the car as his had problems. Naturally I agreed, and, I have not seen the car since. I've found out that his girlfriend liked the car so he has given it to her. How/can I get my $4000 investment back? I have proof of the trade-in and all the payment stubs and bank details of the monthly payments.

It's a good thing you kept your records! Sue him in small claims/district court for unjust enrichment or repayment of a loan. You get all your money back, plus the costs of suing him.

You can also try to get the car (quiet title to vehicle), but that's much harder to win, since your agreement was not in writing. Next time you'll know better, right?

An omission from the incident text is the state. I am a friend of the victim here in Florida
