last year I entrusted my car to have some work done to it by a certain shop in my area. This shop had done some previous work done on my car. In the beginning, he estimated the work to be roughly $3500. This was for combined body & mechanical work. I had another car to drive at the time so this was no problem. I gave him 1500.00 to get started on the work with the knowledge that if he found other things wrong he would notifiy me and did so. a few weeks later he found another problem. this was to be $500.00. Several weeks later he found out the transmission was going to be needed to replaced because the housing was cracked. this was another $800.00 After the work was suupposedly completed, he told me the car was near completion and would be ready by the end of the week. When that time came he said it was'nt ready after all that he wanted to check a few things out first before releasing it to me. In the meanwhile, I left work on a disability leave and was not well enough to keep on this guy to return my car back to me. I am still not able to drive but need to get this car back "completed", because I incurred some bills due to my disability and need to sell this car. Right now my car was returned to my possession 2 weeks ago looking like a tornado hit it, none of my personal effects were in the car, not even the registration in the glove box was there. Now he tells me the car has not been aligned, and admitted that he needed to clean the inside. He is holding my car hostage and all I want is to get my car back the way it should be. Obviously, this is not getting handled in a business like fashion. I called Consumer Affairs about this but it could take awhile to get this taken care of if I let them handle this. I probably will complain to them once I get this car taken care of but need to get it sold ASAP to pay off a debt. Any suggestions?

I agree that, in the long run, the Department of Consumer Affairs is the best remedy.

For now, however, pershaps a letter to the garage on your behalf from a lawyer would get you the car fast.
