Montana-I have bought a used car from a private person in Oct 07. I have put a couple thousand dollars into the repairs of this car. The title was not in his name when I purchased it from him and I was told that he "title jumped", which I was also told was illegal. I feel he should refund some of the money $4600, that I paid for the car, due to the troubles I have had with it. I have no bill of sale, just proof of the check I wrote to him. Can I do anything?

More Car Trouble

a year and a half ago i bought a vw bug at a collector car show/swap meet. the seller had in his posession , the title, and the vin numbers were matching. i then immediately went to the dmv to change the ownership and register the car. the title was clear, i had no problems.
that was then, this is now.
last wed morning, i was awakend by the sheriffs office conducting a felony warrant search at my residence. scaring my neighbors, and my wife, and i as well. they claimed that the title was forged. however, the supposed owner, did not act until almost 2 years later.
as the detective described to me, the owner had the car stored for at least one, maybe more years, with the title inside the car. and showed no interest or concern for a considerable amount of time. whatever the deal was with the shop and the owner only they know, but as far as i could tell, i made a legitimate purchase, and the owner possibly exibited abandonment of a motor vehicle,,, literally to the definition of the term. i now am without my car, without thousands of dollars, ( the sheriffs also siezed the reciepts i had and the title and registration, leaving me with little or no documented proof of ownership.
my questions are as follows, "what are my rights"? "do i have any legitimate claim to the car, and were my rights violated"? and, "am i now a victim , do i need to exersise my rights"? and can i be sucessful

Please start your own thread, do not highjack someone else's. You may get answers then.

Normally I wouldn't respond, but I'm bumping spam down by answering.

You do not, nor have you ever apparently owned the car. You have the right to sue the person you paid for the car.
