Carpool with the principal

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

My son Matthew (age 14) goes to a public (charter) school 50 miles from our home. The school just got a new principal, who lives less than 1 mile away from us, and is willing to carpool with my son; however, neither he nor I know anything about the legalities involved. Is the principal opening himself up to any liabilities? Does it matter whether I give verbal or written consent to a carpooling arrangement? Is it relevant that he is the school principal, rather than, say, a family friend with no attachment to the school? No one else lives nearby, and we'd both like the carpool to work.

The school should NOT be liable for what he is doing as carpooling with a student is NOT part of his duties. He would be liable for his own actions while driving your son. it doesn't change things that he is the school principal -- at least not legally. Your son might be teased for riding with the principal but that is not a legal issue.
