Is it illegal to cash checks that are made payable to a business? Or, is this practice allowed by law?

A: If the business asks you to cash them, then it's okay; if it is not the business who asks you to cash them, then it's stealing.

Most banks, if not all, will not allow you to cash a check made payable to a business. Business checks must be deposited to an account that has the business name as the title. If you are the business owner and or a signer on the account you can then make a withdrawal or issue a check made payable to yourself. As always, you will need proper ID.
