What is the name of your state? New Jersey

I feel ashamed and horrible.. But I was caught shoplifting today. Around $35.00 at a supermarket. Security said he wasnt going to call the cops, but that I had to pay a shoplifting fine. He said I wont have a record. He made me sign two papers. I was so nervous I cant recall what it said. I know one stated he was releasing me. Another one said Civil Demand.

I paid $150 right there by credit card. He gave me a copy of the receipt. And he kept a copy. He took down all of my personal information.

I am so upset at myself and terrified that I will get a warrant for my arrest, summons to go to court in the mail or something? Do you know if this will happen?

From your post, it should be over. You stated that the POLICE were not called;
and you did not say whither you were issued any type or kind of Summons. So,
glad you got caught and will not repeat your indiscretion, for, the next (if there
should be one) you might not be so lucky

FYI: When one is caught STEALING/SHOPLIFTING it is a matter of record, and
will have longterm adverse consequences, especially in the JOB market!

Youre so right.. Im so stupid. I dont know what I was thinking. but it will never ever happen again. now i know what it really means when someone says they were ashamed of themselves cause I sure am.

They did not call police or issue me a summons. I did sign two papers though. Once was title civil demand but I dont know what it said. The other, I just saw a box that he checked that said "released." but i was so nervous that I just signed. I paid $150. and he let me go. But im terrified and cant stop crying worried that i will get a summons in the mail, or a warrant for my arrest?

From your experience. Do you think this is over? Or do they send this to the police department and then send me a summons?

thanks for taking the time to answer.

**A: the store will probably drop it. For your peace of mind call the store and talk to the manager.

I did as you suggested and called the store manager. He says he was not the one that was there yesterday but that he would relay my message of how sorry I was. I asked if I would be getting anything in the mail to appear in court. He said that although I paid a $150 fine yesterday that most likely I would get another letter in the mail from the state stating I was shoplifting and have to pay another fine. I asked him if I had to go to court . He said that he didnt know. that i would probably have to pay a fine from the state but he wasnt sure.

If they didnt call the police, or give me a summons right there, can they still prosecute me? should I go to the store and talk with them?

**A: yes, they can still take further action. Call back and talk to the manager that was there when the incident took place. Also talk to the GM.

You've shoplifted before.

So if you continue your career in shoplifting, you need to learn to say two things:

Where do I catch the bus?

and

Do you want fries with that?

Look on the paper work you have, and see if the Manager's name that was on duty
at the time this happened appears. If so, try calling him or her, and respectfully
request a few minutes of there time. By all means show all the remorse you
have, and ask what you are unsure of. But, from your original post, it does not
sound as if you would be going to Court because you were not ARRESTED & CHARGED!

An added note...

I don't see evidence that OP shoplifted before. I do see evidence, however, that OP has committed "hijacking" another thread (from 2005) as evidenced below :)eek:):

P.S.: Please correct me if I am wrong. :)o)

SJ is psychic. and chances are that this person has shoplifted before. Maybe that they won't again, but that they have before.

and in any case, we do consider thread hijacking shoplifting here. LOL:D

Just FYI chances are that the store WILL NOT take the time or expend the energy or cost to assist in prosecuting you. Most likely you have already paid them the maximum amount available to them in a civil case as well. I do hope you learned a lesson as you say that you have.
