Good luck. Good people sometimes do stupid things. Stupid people rarely do good things. I think you just did a stupid thing.

I cant sleep. Im so nervous, worried and ashamed. I told my husband. I couldnt look at him knowing what I had done. I'm seeking counseling this week cause Ive been feeling worthless for quite some time and am afraid of what its doing to me.
I have a couple of more questions if you dont mind. I keep wondering why the store security let me go? Could it be that he was just telling me I will not have a record to get me to sign things which I dont even remember what i signed cause I was so nervous. I wasnt given a copy or anything. I just wanted to get out of there as fast as I could without getting him upset. He did tell me a couple of times that I will not have a record and that those papers I signed would be for their store use only. But Im wondering if they will turn my information over to the police or state. Can the state come after me? The manager I spoke to at the store told me when I asked that I only paid a "shoplifting fee", that I will get a letter from the state to pay something else. I dont care about the money. I am just praying and hoping that if I get a letter it wont be to appear in court with charges pending.

sorry for all the posts and questions.. Im just freaking out here. sorry. I do have one more question .
I have read several posts from people here and some of them have said that a police was called to their situation, but they were not arrested or anything yet they got a notice in the mail to appear in court. While a police was not called to my situation, cant they still prosecute me? I keep remembering the security guy telling me he was letting me go cause i seemed like a good person, and that I will not have a record. BUT prior to that he kept telling me he should lock me up. He finally said he would let me go, and that was it. But he took down all my information, license, description, ss#. I asked him about it and he said that it was for their information only. Could he be just telling me that and then hand over the info for my arrest or prosecution? sorry for all the questions. I know I deserve this. so it serves me right to go thru this. But I am really sorry and regretful.

Answer to both: I don't know. You'd have to ask the folks involved.

Answer to both: Yes.

a Shoplifting fee??? what the heck?? The letter that he is talking about is most likely a letter that will ask for the full amount of civil penalty allowable to the store.

Yes the state could come after you. Will they? probably not. Unless you don't pay the civil penalty. I would certainly ask the store for a copy of whatever it was that you signed. And keep records of the amount that you have paid to them as well.

Even if the state does decide to prosecute, you are probably looking at a fine, or may even be able to accept some kind of diversion program. I am not minimizing what you did, it was wrong, and it was stupid, and it costs the rest of consumers as well. But seriously, don't make yourself sick over it.
