What is the name of your state? West Virginia

How much does a cease-and-desist letter cost and what is the process for getting one?
There is a website that is using my name without permission and including false information about me that can damage my reputation. I want them to stop and remove my name from the site and any promotional materials.

Thanks!

Hire a lawyer to write you one -- how much it will cost will depend on your local area and which attorney you choose.

Or write it yourself. It might be more effective if it came from a lawyer, though.

Been There, Done That

You can write one yourself. Send it US Postal Service certified mail w/ receipt.
It should be formal and communicate your 'cease and desist' request and give the reason and reasonable terms.

These are not binding _orders_, but a formal, recorded communiqué that something is occurring and you are in conflict with said occurrence.

A court would have to issue a binding legally binding _cease and desist_

Yet, before that----Have you tried to contact the _publisher_?

I say this in empathy as the Progressive Review published inaccurate information about me, stating I had been found guilty by a court-martial whereas I had NOT (merely separated with no criminal charges, an administrative process) . upon discovery, I contacted the publisher and it took one or two calls and emails, and they voluntarily removed the item replacing it with the accurate information with an editorial correction comment posted stating it had included previous inaccurate information.

Yet, even at risk to reputation, if it is true, they can state it!----Its inaccurate or privileged information that is protected.

although I do agree with the previous poster, the attorney may have more effect, but use the call, then your request, then a lawyer. You will have exhausted all your resources before expending any (more) expense.

Hope this helps. Good Luck.
