Certified Pre-Owned vehicle warranty

I purchased a "Certified Pre-Owned" vehicle in 4/99. It is a 97 model. I live in California.
It came with a warranty--that't the reason I bought a "used" car.
The warranty was for 4 years or 50,000 miles. Is it reasonable to assume it would be valid until at least 12/31/00, since it's a 97 vehicle?
They are saying that the warranty has expired because the car was originally sold in 10/96. But I was not informed of that.
Am I reasonable in assuming I'm covered until 12/31/00? Will that argument help me? Are ambiguities resolved in favor of the warranty holder (similar to insurance law)?

A car's warranty starts on the date it was first purchased. If paper exists that shows that your car was first sold in 10/96 then your warranty is done. Although the dealer should have been good enough to tell you when the car was first sold, it's your job to ask. All they really have to tell you is the length and terms of the warranty. Sorry, not enough ambiguity to help here. Sorry!
