What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Colorado

I recently came to the US on a B1/B2 visa with the understanding that once I was offered a job, I would be able to change my visa status to a H-2B visa. I was offered a job, and while we were filling out the paper work, we were told by an immigration lawyer that is was nearly impossible, not to mention very expensive, to change my status. Is there any other possible way one could change their visa status? Or any other way I would legally be allowed to work in the US?
