What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

I vacated an apartment a few months ago. I gave 30 days notice to the landlord over email, and in a written letter.

I left the apartment 3 weeks later, changed all my services to my new address(phone, internet, electricity). When I left I left a few things, an old cheap kitchen table, and misc trash. When I left I didnt return my keys to the landlord.

I got a letter and check a month later. The check was frighteningly small, they had taken out $500 + $50(late fee) for "unpaid" rent.

They stated they believed the unit was "abandoned" because of the things left behind, and charged me half a months rent and took it out of my depost, along with a "late fee". All the big stuff was moved out, the breakers were off, and services transferred, can they legally do that, how do I fight them back?

(PS. If you're a renter, avoid AIMCO!)

If they didn't charge you for hauling your crap to the city dump, they should have. How were they supposed to know you vacated when you didn't even return the keys. Tenants often give notice and then decide to stay. There is a post here about that very issue. Check your LL tenant act. After all, you do live in CA.
