What is the name of your state? Wisconsin

I made the mistake of ordering "high speed internet" service from Hughesnet. They came and installed a dish and I received service for about a week, which was a huge disappointment, it was as slow or slower than dial up. After this week was up it stopped working all together, for the next four weeks I called many times and was given such terrible run around and had to argue with people from India until it was clear to me I would never get anywhere. I told them to stop my service and to stop using my credit card as I would not pay for service I was not getting, they continued to use my card. I disputed the charges with my credit card company and was awarded return of the installation and service of about $550.00. Now I have gotten a letter from a collection agency stating I must write them back to let them know my intension as to the validity of this debt. They are stating that I owe almost $900.00 and must pay or they will order a judgement against me. What do I do? How can they get a judgement if they did not provide service and the service was not as it was advertised? I googled them and many, many people have had the identical experience I did. Some mentioned the FTC, and I have filed a complaint, but I am worried about what action they can take against me or how they can harm my credit. Please let me know what I must do.

Disputing a charge on a credit card does not mean you don't owe the money.

Did you have a performance guarantee of speed? What was it?

I am sure there is a lot of small print to protect the slow speed and the not being able to download anything and that would be a different situation than the fact I had no service after one week and could not get any help to reestablish service. That should be a breach of contract, is'nt it? I could not spend another day trying to communicate with these people and get nowhere, and should not be required to pay for nothing. How can they get a judgement against me? Will this go to court, here in Wis? What will happen with this?

You should file a complaint with the FCC, believe me they are like bulldogs with this type of poor service. I speak from experience as I have worked for one of the top cable companies in the country.

Did they give you any kind of ID numbers on the complaint(s) .

AOL used to , and if you got them , use them to your advantage .

Sounds just like AOL , I no longer use them .

Sadly, I have this ISP, as well. It has been a 2 year nightmare that I have not been able to wake from, as this is the only ISP available to me...

When I signed up for service, I had a 30-day window to cancel my account without incurring cancelation fees. If you do not cancel within this window, they will sock you with a ton of fees and there is little you can do about it. It's all in their user contract.

In short, if you canceled within that 30-day window, they can't do a thing to you. However, if it was after that 30-day period, you do owe that money, per the user agreement.

Good luck and sorry you were sucked in to the terrible world of satellite.

I have Hughesnet and have never had problems. Perhaps you need to tweak your system.

We're pleased with the service, and just had it installed at our farm so we could have service there and at home.
