I gave a deposit to an organization for a trip and when they remitted the money back to me with their check, they wrote it out for an amount much greater then what I gave them. When I deposited the check, I didn't realize the error and now the company wants me to remit the extra money to them. However, after paying my bills I don't have the money. Am I legally liable to give them the money back if it was their error?

Of COURSE you are legally (and morally) obligated to pay the money back.

If you wrote a check to a company for the wrong amount wouldn't you expect them to return the money? Wouldn't it be stealing if they didn't?

How is this any different?
