I live in Florida and recently put a stopped payment on a check that I had given to a contractor because he did not fulfill the terms of our work agreement and would not sign a waiver of lien. When he didn't return my phone calls and show up at my home to finish the job, I put in for the stop payment at my bank.
Turns out he had gone to a check cashing place right after I had given him the check and recieved the funds. Now the check cashing place is saying they are going to contact the attorney general and take me to court if I don't make good on the funds since they can't get in touch with this contractor.
Am I actually liable now to the check cashing store for this, even thought my agreement was with the contractor and I had actually made the check out to him?
