My son sold used car to some one in Ireland. He send a check, $14,000 including a transportation fee. The bank, Chevy Chase Bank, cleared the check. And my son bought another used car. The guy in Ireland said he needed $4,000 for emergency. My son sent the money thru the Western Union since the bank cleared the check. Then several days later the bank said the check the guy sent was no good. and the bank charged the money against my son's checking account. It seems that bank is responsbile for the money. We are willing to give back the money except $4,000 since bank cleared the check. Isn't the bank responsble? If the check was not cleared we would not have sent the money the guy in Ireland. Please answer! Thank you in advance. Soon

Your son has been scammed. This type of scam has been going on for years. Research "Nigeria scam" etc...

Why in the world would your son send money back to a complete stranger?

Why do people continue to fall for this???

If I send you a check for 10K to "be my friend", would you Western Union me 7K back immediately???
Thanks!

Panzertanker;

My question exactly! Can't people see that this just doesn't "fit"???? Are there so many dupes and rubes in the U.S., with too much money and too little common sense, that "we" are such easy prey for thieves? Is it because we are so dumb/uneducated, overly-trusting/childish, or maybe a little greedy???

Geeeeez...we do badly enough getting screwed by our own people on "realistic" deals. What's up with this??

SSONG0703;

Kiss the money goodbye. Call the Secret Service (they are handling these cases) and make a report. At least you'll add to the databank. SIGH........!

Lesson learned.

You basically imply that your son sent $4000 out of the goodness of his heart to a stranger having an emergency.

How, in this day and age, can people still not know about this? My mom has NEVER used a computer, yet she knows about this scam, and many others!
