I have a dilemma that I was hoping someone could help me with!
I was applying to an online law school. I work fulltime and do not have the time or money to quit my job and go to school fulltime. However, I want to learn the law so this seemed ideal. The problem is that an admissions director told me that in order for my application to be considered, I must send a check for $995 for the down payment of tuition with my application. She said if I am not accepted, they will return the check. She said if I AM accepted, they will notify me before cashing it. If I change my mind, they will send the check back or they will give me time to put the money in the bank before they cash it. This does NOT seem right to me. Why not ask for tuition payment AFTER I am accepted? It seems like a lot of trouble to be sending checks back to people who either are not accepted or change their minds. As of now, that money is not in my checking account. So trusting someone to hold the check and ask me before cashing it is a big risk to take. If they are dishonest and cash it anyway, I will have a $995 bounced check to deal with. I thought about writing the check, then stopping payment on it. But I have a problem with them asking for it in the first place before I am even notified of acceptance.
Can someone please tell me....Is this common practice or does it sound suspicious?
Thanks!
